The mesh padding on the back actually makes a difference on long walks, no sweaty shirt by the time I get home. I've been using the side pockets for my water bottle and umbrella, and there's still room in the front zipper for keys and snacks.
Took this on a weekend trip and the 18" x 6" x 11.5" size fit perfectly under the seat in front of me. The front zipper pocket is where I kept my passport and phone, super easy to grab without digging. Straps adjust nicely too, no shoulder ache after a few hours.
The side pockets actually fit my 32oz water bottle, which never happens with smaller backpacks. The zippered stash pocket on the back is perfect for my phone and keys at the airport.
